What is truck platooning?

Platooning is when a group of trucks all connected using vehicle to vehicle communication travel closely one behind the other. There are various models of platooning technology with some having one driver in the lead truck and no drivers in the following trucks to models where all trucks have drivers  but the lead driver does most of the driving work.

With the approval recently being given to conduct Australian trials, there are many questions as to whether or not truck platooning will benefit road safety and the industry. Naturally some truck drivers are a bit nervous that it could affect their jobs.
