NatRoad recently voiced its support of government’s move to improve road safety by mandating electronic stability control (ESC) in new trucks and roll stability control (RSC) in new trailers.

NatRoad issued a submission which followed member consultation via a working group convened to consider the issues.

They referred to National Truck Research Accident Centre (NTARC) research which revealed that 28.9 per cent of major crash incidents involved vehicle rolloverS whilst on the road, prompting their support to alleviate rollovers.

ESC and other related systems like Antilock Brake Systems and Roll Stability Control have been found by government to be effective.

This would add to earlier changes mandating ABS systems for some heavy vehicles and the introduction of guidelines developed by the trucking industry for operating truck and trailer combination with different braking characteristics.

The proposed timing for the mandatory changes are as follows : for heavy vehicles,

  • 1 November 2019 for new model vehicles
  • 1 November 2021 for all new vehicles

for medium and heavy trailers,

  • 1 July 2019 – for all new model vehicles
  • 1 November 2019 – for all new vehicles.
