40 Countries Agree Cars Must Have Automatic Braking Systems
It’s well known that the majority of road crashes where trucks and cars are involved are caused by the cars, which is why a new development by the UN is significant.
Japan, the European Union and forty countries, excluding the US and China have agreed to require new cars and light commercial vehicles to be equipped with automated braking systems starting next year.
It will require all vehicles to be sold already equipped with the technology by which sensors monitor how close a pedestrian or object is to the vehicle. The system then triggers the brakes automatically if a collision is imminent or if the driver isn’t responding in time.
The new ruling extends upon existing UN rules on the braking system for trucks and buses, usually for safety on higher speed motorways.
