Calls for Rest Area Focus backed by NatRoad
The fitness for purpose of heavy vehicle rest areas is under the spotlight after The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) called for government action on the issue.
NatRoad called on federal and state governments to work with the road transport industry and address the issue of inadequate heavy vehicle rest areas across the country, following the release of Austroads’ recent publication of Guidelines for the Provision of Rest Area Facilities.
NatRoad CEO Warren Clark said a similar set of guidelines was issued by the National Transport Commission in 2005 and 14 years later the problem hasn’t been solved.
He said NatRoad has been highlighting the need for construction and maintenance of a sufficient number of heavy vehicle rest areas with appropriate facilities, because availability and the standard of basic amenties are a common problem. Often truck rest stops aren’t located where they are needed, he added.
He said the lack of truck rest stops was an important road safety issue for all road users, not just truck drivers. Read more https://www.fullyloaded.com.au/industry-news/1901/natroad-backs-calls-for-serious-rest-areas-focus
