Government Plans to Use Technology to Tackle Fatigue

The federal government and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) plan to address truck driver fatigue, pledging $302,000 for field trials of fatigue monitoring technologies.

The government announced trials at the NHVR’s Fatigue Safety Forum detailing the commencement of field trials of SmartCap technology by the Port of Brisbane and the Queensland Trucking Association.

According to Federal transport minister Michael McCormack, the field trials aim to determine the effectiveness of technology in reducing road deaths and trauma caused by driver fatigue. Research says driver fatigue caused between 8 to 20 per cent of all crashes on Australian roads.

An additional $250,000 has been pledged by the NHVR to trial other driver fatigue monitoring technologies and initiatives, including in-cabin sensors and on-person sensors.
